pinocchio

Pinocchio 2006

Making the Blue Fairy a narrator adds spark and immediate interest to this production. Rebecca Moore is the Blue Fairy. She wakes from her dozing, embraces the audience and begins recounting the tale. She also plays the cricket and makes him rather like the Artful Dodger. A fine idea.

This Pinocchio is a colourful, magical, cartoon style version without the darker tones of the original story. The emphasis is on fun and sympathies are with Pinocchio. There are jolly singalong pop songs, lots of audience banter and some enjoyable comedy routines, especially in the school room. The under the sea episode is shown with black light theatre technique and is sweetly crafted.

Kerry Whiteside’s portrayal of the eponymous puppet boy will enchant children. She moves with impressive control.

Stephen Donald plays Fox DJ, a sort of actor cum showman. This is a cracking and frequently audacious performance - acting with wit and style.

The PMA company is now firmly established at this venue. Last year’s Beauty and the Beast was a mighty leap forward. Pinocchio is certainly entertaining but does not quite reach the same heights. Perhaps with a less appealing central character it would have.

Mr Fox - boooh!
