cinderella - the best pantomime i have seen in my life

What a gem of a production this is. Proof, if proof were needed, that a low budget show touring small venues otherwise overlooked by larger producers, can come up with a first rate show boasting a crisply written contemporary script and performances deserving of a major showcase.

An impressive set, excellent sound and some broad local accents only add to the enjoyment of a production which is genuinely aimed at all the family. Ben Watson’s Buttons is part Lee Evans and part Jim Carrey - a manic performance of the first order which must wear him out. Lydia Cotton’s Cinderella is instantly appealing - attractive and vulnerable with a good voice while Sally Evans is thoroughly horrid as wicked stepmother Lady Trevayne.

Chris Clarkson interestingly plays Prince Charming as more of a bumbling fop than a sex symbol while Dan Clarkson and Jefferson Turner make the most of every moment as Ugly Sisters Britney and Christina. Plenty of pop, sport and television references pepper the dialogue and even the corniest of panto one-liners seems fresh in their hands.

Mel Fielding’s northern Fairy Godmother is another instant winner and Hayley Neunes’ fresh choreography keeps the hard working juveniles on their toes. Even adland’s Sheila’s Wheels, Titanic and Jimmy Cagney get a look in during this first rate show.
