This Aladdin is a brand new adaptation of the familiar story. It is told from fresh and interesting angles but there is not a whiff of compromise in the narrative. In fact the story is improved.

George Critchley is the writer, as is usual with a pantomime at Colne's Municipal Hall. He also produces and plays the Genie – but this is a talented team effort, as Critchley himself readily admits. This year he has stepped aside to give Stevie Smallwood a chance to impress in the Wishee Washee roe – and young Smallwood is very, very good. He thinks on his feet and has an engaging charm.

Each character looks to have been specially created for this particular show. The Slave of the Ring, played by Gail Rowe, is on roller skates throughout the evening and she does not put a skate wrong. It is a panto shining with good ideas, excellent comedy and exceptional dancing. Above all it has that elusive sense of occasion.

A Christmas in Colne without a George Critchley pantomime is just unthinkable.
